This is a repeat mating of our “New litter” so the name theme of this litter just had to be “Olde”. It is a very precious litter, being Murphy’s last litter, which means the singleton pup is very important to us. We called her

On the morning this little girls was born I thought I was in a “Deja Vue” loop, ending in some happy news and some disappointment; but at least it was not sad news. We rarely have the need for Caesarean births but four days before we had had received a bundle of joy called Fenrik Pie in the Sky, born by Caesarean.
Lacey’s story started the afternoon of the 29th May, when I was up the back with the dogs and Murphy came up to me and worried me until I took her back in the house to her whelping area. Nothing much happened after that, until about midnight when Murphy started some mild straining but no genuine contractions. When taken outside she was all hunched and not too happy.
At 6am this morning I rang my vet. By 7am the ultrasound was passed over her belly showing what seemed to be two good fetal hearts beating, but ultrasound is not accurate. We were wondering whether to wait or do a Caesarean and decided to do a progesterone test to see how far into labour she was. Her progesterone indicating she had been in labour for several hours so she was straight onto the surgery table. My second Caesarean in 4 days!
Uterine inertia is also common in older bitches and Murphy was in that risk category. (The litter 4 days earlier was by frozen semen – also in the high risk category for Caesareans.)
As it turns out, despite ultrasound evidence to the contrary, there was only the one pup. That is disappointing, because we have people wanting puppies.
Of course, the happy news is one little black and white girl. She nearly did not make it. I could not feel a heart beat at first, but with a bit of stimulant, oxygen and massage, the pup soon started to gasp and then yell. And having that little girl meant we had one last pup from our gorgeous Murphy and her bloodline would be preserved.
